Position summary

Introduction

To direct and control Capricorn Group Ltd (Capricorn Group) financial planning, financial management and financial accounting. Ensures that value added and professional financial management and accounting policies, practices, systems and solutions are developed, implemented and controlled in support of strategic objectives and in compliance with International Financial Accounting and Reporting Standards and statutory regulations. Statutory reporting for the entire Group will also form part of this role.

Job description


Key Performance Areas (KPAs)

1. Strategic Financial Planning and Budgeting

  • Oversees, manages and controls Capricorn Group financial planning process (in partnership with executive stakeholders) to ensure maximum profitability, tax efficiency, effective cost management and adequate cash flow in line with strategic business objectives.
  • Collates, consolidates, prepares and controls annual budgets, 3-year forecasts, revised estimates and rolling financial forecasts for Capricorn Group and its subsidiaries in support of strategic business priorities, business life cycle and economic trends.
  • Applies financial modelling in a predictive and shaping capacity by forecasting what if scenarios and financial options based on changing variables.
  • Support the Chief Financial Officer and monitors the key financial drivers of the business, ensuring that critical indicators/ early warning signals and financial controls are in place to ensure financial stability.
  • Partners the Chief Financial Officer in setting and driving the delivery of key financial measures and targets for Capricorn Group.
  • This includes the ongoing measuring and monitoring of actuals against budget to assess progress and to identify problem/ risk areas and/or growth opportunities.

2. Group Financial reporting

  • Maintain and improve framework, processes and guidelines for monthly financial reporting by subsidiaries.
  • Analyse and interpret monthly financial reported results of subsidiaries through monthly conference calls or meetings to ensure early identification of trends, poor performance, etc. and propose remediation action to Chief financial officer.
  • Review quarterly consolidation of financial reports; and
  • Ensure financial budgeting, consolidation and reporting systems across the group are regularly updated , properly back up and well supported.

3. Consolidated Financial and Statutory Reporting

  • Prepares and presents an integrated, holistic and consolidated financial report for Capricorn group to the Chief financial officer on a, quarterly, half yearly and annual basis;
  • Identifies and interprets patterns and comparative trends in financial reports to identify critical risks, gaps and interdependencies across the business enterprise;
  • Directs and drives the timely management, control and submission of all statutory returns/reports, including the relevant VAT and Income Tax returns and levies;
  • Ensures that all queries on statutory returns and reporting are promptly resolved;
  • Controls and consolidates Capricorn group Interim and Annual Financial Statements for publication;
  • Oversee and manages the Capricorn group annual/integrated report compilation and publication;
  • Compile the Capricorn group interim and full year result announcement to be published in the newspapers and NENS for the CFOs review ; and
  • Review quarterly and annual consolidated supervision returns.

4. Management Accounting

  • Oversees the day-to-day management and control of all centralised transactional accounting processes to ensure that all accounts reconcile and that account allocations and payments are correctly processed and authorised in line with policy and process parameters
  • Reviews and manages the quality and turnaround times of the accounting process to optimise, streamline and/or re-engineer accounting processes for improved accuracy, efficiency and risk control; and
  • Manages the collation, processing, interpretation and control of management accounts for Capricorn Group, Capricorn Capital, Capricorn Hofmeyer Property and Namib Bou. This includes the provision of financial/ quantitative data, as well as non-financial information, to enable effective scorekeeping, cost control, planning, pricing and management decision-making.
  • Manages and controls costs and expenditure for Capricorn group. This includes identifying cost drivers, direct costs, hidden costs, contingent liability costs and less tangible costs to support management decision-making in the effective and appropriate management and control of costs;
  • Actively confirms tax compliance and planning takes place.
  • Ensures that the cash flow is effectively managed.

5. Special Projects / Financial Advisory Services

  • Support the Chief financial officer in conducting viability studies and provides advice to executives on financial performance criteria for new project proposals, including business expansions, and joint venture cost and profitability analyses.
  • Support the Chief financial officer with compile investment cases for all investments/disinvestments by Capricorn group for presentation and recommendation to the Capricorn group investment committee.
  • Support subsidiaries with capital raising initiatives; and

6. Procurement and Asset Control

  • Manages and controls Capricorn group procurement process by establishing best practices, systems and controls for the following:

o Identifying business needs;

o Sourcing suppliers;

o Evaluating bids and proposals;

o Awarding contracts or purchase orders;

o Tracking progress and ensuring compliance with SLAs;

o Receiving deliveries;

o Inspecting and inventorying the deliverable, and

o paying the supplier.


7. Compliance

  • Maintain and establishes (if required) policies and controls to ensure compliance with International Financial Accounting and Reporting Standards (IAS & IFRS), companies act and statutory and regulatory, Namibian Stock Exchange rules as they pertain to the Finance function;
  • Reviews and integrates external and internal audit findings into operational policy and process improvements to minimise risk; and
  • Ensures compliance with current corporate governance requirements. This includes keeping abreast of developments in compliance and governance standards/ best practices and updating Finance policies and practices in accordance with these.

8. People management

  • Manages the team to ensure that work standards and quality work output targets are achieved and maintained;
  • Together with the Chief Financial Officer establishes appropriate, clear and consistent work measures for the Finance area;
  • Manages the performance contribution of staff against clear and established measures/ targets;
  • Recognises and rewards outstanding performance;
  • Identifies and manages poor performance (in line with the poor performance code) providing an opportunity for corrective steps to be taken to rehabilitate performance;
  • Proactively shares knowledge, coaches and mentors the team;
  • Identifies strengths and weaknesses and provides staff with the appropriate training to improve skills;
  • Actively builds and encourages collaborative team relationships to help accomplish team goals; and
  • Actively supports employment equity by utilising diversity to the benefit of the team and customers. Ensures that all team members and customers/ suppliers are treated with equal respect and dignity.

  • Minimum Charted Accounted qualification or equivalent post-graduate qualification

Experience

  • At least 5 years working experience post articles in a financial Accounting field environment
