Why this Rigger position exists:
To s et up rigging gears for lift ing and mov ing equipment or material in manufacturing plant, shipyard or on construction project. Selects rigging gears required for specific rigging operation i.e slings, shackles, cables, ropes, pulleys, winches, blocks and sheaves etc. according to weight and size of load to be moved.
KEY JOB OUTPUTS:
Assisting technical personnel at an advanced level
- Understand and Interpret basic drawings.
- Schedule own work sequence to ensure tasks are completed on time.
- Determination of basic time estimation to complete tasks.
- Competent to operate all hand tools.
- Comprehensive knowledge in the use and workings of rigging gear.
- Test rigging gear to ensure safety and reliability.
- Generate and develop rigging plans/studies.
- Competent to operate workshop overhead cranes.
- Operate forklift.
- Comprehensive knowledge of mobile and fixed cranes.
- Comprehensive knowledge of all hand signals to signal or verbally direct workers engaged in hoisting and moving loads to ensure safety of workers and materials.
- Weight calculation or assessment.
- Control movement of heavy equipment through narrow openings or confined spaces, using chain falls, gin poles, gallows frames, and other equipment.
- Understanding and interpreting safety factors.
- Colour coding and record keeping of rigging gear.
- Comprehensive knowledge of calibration certificates.
- Comprehension of all risk mitigating procedures when doing critical lifts.
- Tilt, dip, and turn suspended loads to maneuver over, under, or around obstacles, using multi-point suspension techniques.
- Inspection on all rigging gear and maintaining records.
- Select gear, such as cables, pulleys, and winches, according to load weights and sizes, facilities, and work schedules.
- Dismantles and stores rigging equipment after use.
- Attach loads to rigging to provide support or prepare them for moving, using hand and power tools.
Health and Safety
- Complete 5 Steps safety task observation.
- Complete risk assessment with Supervisor on site.
- Adhere to company and legislative Health, Safety and Environmental standards.
- Apply and encourage good housekeeping practices.
Ad hoc duties
- Attend to any reasonable request made by the Foreman/Supervisor that falls within your work scope.
- Adhere to company quality standards and excellent engineering practices at all times.
- Live the O&L Persona and Values.
- Adhere to policies and procedures.
- Perform overtime work when requested.
Reports to:
- Rigging Supervisor.
First-level subordinates:
- Operator Rigger.
Work environment:
- Where operations are located - including but not limited to Workshop, Syncrolift, Mine Plants, Construction Sites etc.
Minimum Qualification & Experience Required :
- Grade 12, National Trade Certificate in Rigging (Red Seal).
- English/Afrikaans Literate speaking, reading and writing.
- 4 years relevant experience.
Know-how / Specific knowledge required:
- Ability to distinguish between colours as part of day-to-day operations.
Other requirements:
- Knowledge of Labour Act.
