Description

The Mechanic will be responsible for ensuring the optimal performance, safety and roadworthiness of the companys fleet of trucks and machines. The role involves performing routine maintenance, repairs and servicing on time, as well as attending to breakdowns throughout Namibia. The Mechanic must also ensure compliance with company safety protocols, maintain accurate records and communicate effectively with the office regarding any necessary updates or challenges.

Key Responsibilities:

Fleet Roadworthiness:

Ensure all trucks are inspected and maintained to meet roadworthy standards at all times.

Conduct necessary repairs and checks before vehicles are dispatched on the road.

Timely Maintenance & Servicing:

Schedule and perform services for trucks every 10,000 km and for machines at 250-hour intervals.

Regularly update service schedules and ensure all service records are accurately logged and maintained.

Keep a detailed and updated service sheet to track maintenance activities and upcoming service intervals.

Breakdown Response:

Respond promptly to all machine and truck breakdowns, regardless of location within Namibia.

Troubleshoot and repair on-site or coordinate with local experts for complex repairs when necessary.

Routine Maintenance:

Perform routine and preventive maintenance on all machines and trucks, ensuring optimal performance and minimizing the risk of unexpected failures.

Regularly assess machine condition and take proactive steps to maintain and repair as needed.

Safety and Fleet Management:

Ensure all fleet vehicles meet safety requirements, including brakes, lights, tires, and fluid levels.

Conduct regular inspections to ensure fleet compliance with safety regulations and company policies.

Ensure that all vehicles and machines operate safely and efficiently.

Mechanical Repairs:

Execute mechanical repairs, adjustments, and maintenance, including engine work, transmission, brakes, and other relevant repairs.

Utilize diagnostic tools to identify issues and ensure effective and timely resolution.

Coordination of Expert Repairs:

  • For tasks that are beyond personal expertise, coordinate with external mechanics or workshops to ensure that machines and vehicles are repaired quickly and efficiently.
  • Arrange and oversee any third-party repairs, ensuring quality workmanship.

Effective Communication:

  • Maintain clear and consistent communication with the office regarding the status of repairs, breakdowns, and ongoing maintenance.
  • Report any delays, challenges, or additional support required to ensure fleet operations are not disrupted.

Compliance and Company Practices:

  • Adhere to all of the employer's established practices, rules, and safety regulations.
  • Stay updated on company policies and procedures to ensure full compliance and seamless operations.
  • Follow instructions from management in a lawful and timely manner, ensuring tasks are completed to company standards.

Additional Duties:

  • Perform other duties as required by the employer, which may arise during the course of employment, and within the scope of mechanical and fleet operations.

Requirements

Skills and Qualifications:

  • 5 years proven experience as a Mechanic, particularly with trucks (Scania, Mercedes & MAN ) and heavy machinery. (Especially Caterpillar Graders and Bulldozers)
  • In-depth knowledge of vehicle systems and components (engines, transmissions, hydraulics, etc.).
  • Ability to diagnose mechanical issues using diagnostic tools and techniques.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to perform under pressure.
  • Ability to travel across Namibia to attend to breakdowns as required.
  • Excellent communication and record-keeping skills.
