Radiation Specialist

MAIN PURPOSE OF THE JOB:

To inspect, monitor, review and enforce compliance to applicable radiation safety legislation, regulations and directives, including hazardous materials control, emergency preparedness, radiological safety, accident prevention and other SHERQ programs and policies in order to ensure a safe workplace and environment.

Key Performance Areas:

• Control of all radiation protection activities at the Husab Mine, including the efficient coordination of activities of the ROs and RSA.
• With support from various stakeholders and business partners, keep and maintain an inventory of the mineral waste materials at the Husab Mine.
• Liaison and correspondence between Swakop Uranium and the NRPA.
• Applying for and maintaining all radiation-related permits and licenses.
• Keeping up-to-date on all matters relating to the national legislative environment and associated radiation-relevant requirements.
• Ensuring that all radiation-related occupational and public monitoring equipment is and remains fully operational, calibrated and maintained.
• Ensure annual report to NRPA on the implementation of the RMP is prepared and presented.
• Classify radiation incidents and notify line management when necessary.
• Monitor and maintain records of radiological and environmental conditions, by ensuring the safe keeping of all records required by the conditions of license.
• Enforce adherence to radiation protection policies and procedures, and report radiation safety concerns to line management.
• Assess radiation risks in the workplace and recommend / advise on changes and/or modifications to ensure safety.

Requirements and experience:

• Grade 12 or current NSSCO with 20 points over 5 subjects.
• B. Sc. Degree (Physics, Engineering, Chemistry, Geophysics, Geology, Postgraduate Diploma in Applied Radiation Science).
• UI approved Radiation Safety Officers Certification (RSO3).
• 6 years experience in relevant field of which 2 years should have been on a supervisory level.
• Valid Code B/BE Drivers License
