Position summary

Introduction

The role of the Database Engineer entails overseeing installation, managing, documenting and setting up database servers across various countries and locations where the Group has a presence in. As a member of the database support team, they will contribute to round-the-clock on-call support for both database infrastructure and security issues. Additionally, the Database Engineer is expected to cooperate with fellow engineers as necessary. The individual in this position will collaborate with other support personnel to assist, troubleshoot, and rectify any database or related problems that arise within all Capricorn Group entities and their Subsidiaries.

KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS (KPAs)

  • Provide guidance and assistance to maintain the database system infrastructure and resolve any issues that might occur.
  • Take Control and Assist in continuously improving and enhancing existing database management elements, processes and procedures.
  • Monitor database system infrastructure performance, availability and uptimes.
  • Report and escalate any database system breaches.
  • Understand and focus on the system governance, guidelines and adherence to PCI-DSS standards, processes and procedures. Where shortcomings exist then they are to be brought in line.
  • Ensure continuous improvement of database availability, scalability and reliability with a strong focus on improving efficiencies at the same time.
  • Install setup and maintain database system monitoring tools and performance management tools.
  • Investigate new technologies and trends to ensure that the CIH group database systems are in line with the latest technologies and trends and recommend ways for the CIH group to take advantage of new technologies.
  • Join troubleshooting blogs, support forums and web groups.
  • Adhere to, maintain and improve standards, policies and procedures as database systems are updated or upgraded or requirements changes are made.
  • Disaster Recovery, ensure that in the event of a DR, the affected area in the group can be recovered and the security integrity of the group is not compromised.
  • Document all database system procedures including installation, configuration, and maintenance and troubleshooting guides where applicable and keep the documentation up to date.
  • Liaise with the system product vendor re calls, patches, updates etc.
  • Develop new database system and application implementation plans and custom scripts to ensure operational reliability.
  • Install, configure and upgrade database management systems.
  • Monitor database activity to identify issues and/or anomalies early and communicate them to IT teams
  • Assist in drafting policies and guidelines for database platforms in the organization.
  • Engineer, implement and monitor database security, stability and performance measures for the protection and availability of the company database environments.
  • Propose technical solutions and new database management tools to help mitigate vulnerabilities and automate repeatable tasks.
  • Write comprehensive reports including assessment-based findings, outcomes and propositions for further database enhancement
  • Analyse existing database systems and make recommendations for changes or improvements.
  • Coordinate and drive system upgrades regularly to remain competitive in the field of the groups database requirements.
  • Communicate the system status and keep users informed of downtime or changes to the system.
  • To ensure any database risks raised by internal or external audits are reported, mitigated and resolved on time.

Operational Management

  • This role needs to work closely with the system, network and desktop engineers as well as service desk agents to provide technical support on the various server and database platforms. This includes new solutions as well modifications to existing database systems and solutions. The Database Engineer will hold a key role in testing, documenting and reviewing database-based solutions in these various areas.
  • In certain cases, given the level of complexity, the Database Engineer will need to participate in the primary analysis and resolution of database related problems and requests.
  • In case of database system related problems and challenges, the Database Engineer will be responsible for resolving and escalating issues as per agreed Service Level Agreements.
  • The Database Engineer will participate in the performance monitoring, trend analysis and advanced troubleshooting on various database environments in the organization.
  • The Database Engineer must ensure that all database-based systems operate to agreed service levels. This includes proactive and reactive monitoring and problem solving, analysis and maintenance of the database infrastructure.
  • Manage the day-to-day operations of database environments by monitoring system performance, configuration, maintenance and repair.
  • Develop procedures to maintain security and protect systems from unauthorized use, acts of nature and user abuse.
  • Develop and coordinate project directions and schedules to maximize benefits and minimize impacts on the customer organizations.
  • The Database Engineer will also be required to travel from time to time to each of the countries where the Capricorn Group have offices and/or subsidiaries.

Knowledge & Skills

  • 5 Years extensive hands-on experience as Database Administrator
  • Good SQL Scripting skills
  • Knowledge and or experience with Oracle / MS SQL
  • Hands on ability to aid in Incident and Problem resolution
  • PCI-DSS Knowledge
  • Database architectures and design
  • Practical experience on DB High Availability and Disaster Recovery
  • Principles and practices of advanced database administration
  • Industry design and configuration standards for enterprise databases
  • Good communication (both verbal and written) skills

  • Degree / Diploma in IT
  • MCDBA Certifications / MCITP Certifications
  • MS Azure Database Administrator Certifications
  • Experience with other DBMS (MySQL, Mongo DB , Oracle, PostgreSQL)
