Description

The Safety, Health, Environmental, and Quality (SHEQ) Manager is responsible for managing, maintaining, and improving safety, health, and environmental standards within the organization. This role includes ensuring compliance with relevant legislation, developing and implementing strategies for SHEQ management, conducting inspections, carrying out accident investigations, maintaining records, and writing safety reports.

Legal and ISO Compliance:

  • Plan, implement, maintain, manage, and continually improve the IMS management system as per ISO standard requirements using the PDCA Cycle (Plan, Do, Check, Act).
  • Ensure compliance with all legislative requirements within the scope of work.
  • Achieve, maintain, and manage compliance with legislation, international standards, company policies, and IMS procedures.

Success Factors:

  • Leadership, commitment, and participation from all organizational levels.
  • Development and promotion of a culture supporting strategic direction, objectives, and IMS.
  • Effective communication and consultation with workers.
  • Allocation of necessary resources to maintain the IMS.
  • Integration of the IMS into the organizations business processes.

Environmental Health and Safety:

  • Ensure alignment of company policies, strategies, objectives, systems, controls, mitigations, procedures, and initiatives with ISO Management System requirements.
  • Ensure site compliance with legislative and SANS standards.
  • Submit monthly HSE statistics relevant to the site.
  • Recommend and administer policies to enhance operations.
  • Ensure audit findings are addressed with objective evidence and targets are achieved.
  • Drive visible felt leadership and behavioral-based safety with employees.
  • Ensure all employees are trained and competent for legal compliance.

Health Management:

  • Promote and maintain a healthy working environment.
  • Implement health and wellness programs for employees.
  • Conduct risk assessments and implement control measures to mitigate health risks.
  • Ensure compliance with health regulations and standards.

Environmental Management:

  • Develop and implement environmental policies and procedures.
  • Monitor and ensure compliance with environmental laws and regulations.
  • Conduct environmental impact assessments and audits.
  • Promote sustainable practices and initiatives within the organization.

Quality Management:

  • Develop and maintain quality management systems (QMS) in line with industry standards.
  • Conduct quality audits and inspections.
  • Ensure products and services meet quality standards and customer expectations.
  • Implement continuous improvement initiatives to enhance quality performance.

Maintenance:

  • Investigate and implement solutions to control expenses.
  • Set up and control the maintenance budget.
  • Plan and prioritize maintenance and repairs of company equipment/property.
  • Develop and implement maintenance procedures.
  • Manage planned maintenance and internal technical/process projects.
  • Control maintenance budget and consumables inventory.
  • Purchase stock to maintain minimum levels.

Ad-Hoc Duties:

  • Perform any other reasonable duties as required or requested by management.
  • Expand roles/scope to cover workloads during high demand or staff absence.

Requirements

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Comprehensive knowledge of waste management operations.
  • Principles of supervision, training, and performance evaluation.
  • Strong knowledge of SHEQ regulations and standards.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Strong leadership and communication skills.
  • Proficiency in using SHEQ management software.
  • Attention to detail and a proactive approach.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Commitment to continuous learning and professional development.

Legal Requirements:

  • Code 8 Driver's License
  • Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment (OSHAct Section 8.2(d))
  • Incident Investigation or ICAM (OSHAct GAR Section 9)
  • Legal Liability on OSHAct, NEMA & NRTA (OSHAct Section 13)

Qualification and Certifications:

  • Matric / Grade 12 NQF 4
  • Degree in Health and Safety
  • Masters in Business Administration will be an added advantage
  • Relevant certifications such as NEBOSH, ISO Lead Auditor, or equivalent
