Position summary

Introduction

The Group Chief Information Officer (CIO) at Capricorn Group is a strategic leadership role responsible for overseeing the development and management of the organization's IT function. The CIO will lead efforts to align IT strategies with business objectives, drive technology innovation, and ensure the efficient utilization of IT resources across the Group and its Business units in Namibia and Botswana. Working closely with the Group Executive Committee, the CIO will provide strategic direction, foster collaboration, and implement IT initiatives to support business growth and operational excellence. The ideal candidate will possess strong leadership skills, extensive experience in IT management, and a proven track record of driving digital transformation in complex organizational settings

Job description


Strategic Functions

  • Develop, maintain, and lead at the highest level the technology architecture, roadmap, and technology choices. Develop required strategies and set parameters for the deployment of technology and optimization of technology resources. Prioritize the use of appropriate technology in the Group and Entities.
  • Participate in the development of business strategy and contribute the differentiation that IT and Digital enable inclusive of Digital Growth.
  • Lead the development of IT strategies, policies, methodologies and processes to Group and Entities through the facilitation and delivery of IT Developments and Implementation.
  • Responsible for the Business Platforms that enable the execution of the Group and Entities Strategies using technology and the agreed Architecture.

Oversight of IT Operations

  • Deliver IT solutions at a strategic and operational level by managing and controlling Group IT operations; talent and workforce management; technology and infrastructure; financial and IT investment and procurement management.
  • Lead the Groups information and data integrity, the security of information systems, data, and equipment. Drive and support the development of the Business Continuity Plan and Disaster Recovery Plan for the appropriate systems. Delivering cyber security (level 1) for the Group and Entities.
  • Direct development, design, and implementation of new applications and changes to existing systems and hardware for improved performance with growth.
  • Lead service operations management including business and customer relations management, quality assurance, and service level management.
  • Lead all approved and prioritized IT epics to ensure that deliverables are as defined in the Business Platforms Product Roadmaps and are aligned with the Groups strategic plan.
  • Group Principal Risk Owner for IT across the Group and Entities
  • Responsible for the Agile PMO for the Group and Entities and facilitate DevOps and Agile for the Group and Entities.
  • Responsible for the South African Resource Centre

Thought Leadership, Collaboration, and Reporting

  • Research existing and emerging technologies and strategize how technology can provide business value. Indicate how the Group will utilize systems for its gain in the near and far-term future in conjunction with Digitize the Core and Digital Growth.
  • Conduct research and make recommendations on products, services, protocols, and standards in support of optimized utilization of technology.
  • Manage the assessment of newly developed technologies to determine their potential value to the Group.
  • Meet with senior executives to promote and establish digital awareness. Present developments and strategies per project to Group Companies Boards and senior management as required.
  • Act as a thought leader in IT offering guidance, inspire innovation, presenting at conferences, creating comprehensive, impactful views of area of expertise, and participate in knowledge economy.
  • Submit all relevant reports to identified Boards and committees and advise accordingly. As functional head for IT, responsible for the Group Board IT Committee reporting and implementation of decisions agreed at the GBITC.

Group Exco

  • Serve in an advisory capacity to support the decision-making process of the Board and Group Exco.
  • Fulfill management and functional responsibility e.g., Group Strategy, strategic and financial targets, and cross-group priorities.
  • Advise specifically on technology architecture and technology choices as an EXCO Member. Provide strategic IT and Digital guidance to enable Group strategy.

Leadership (Division and People

  • Lead, inspire, and coach a team of high-caliber professionals, creating succession to key roles, and enhancing the Groups capability.
  • Drive talent management and is responsible for the Performance Development of Direct Reports, providing clear direction on strategic goals as translated and prioritized into business and performance measures.
  • Oversee the divisional budget and the preparation of yearly budgets to meet IT operational and capital expenditure objectives. Review and facilitate approval of major IT services contracts with both software and hardware vendors/suppliers, ensuring a cost-benefit focus on Group information technology management is maintained.
  • Create a culture of constructive challenges of assumption and practice. Drive excellent teamwork and behaviours aligned with Groups purpose and ambition.

Academic Qualifications

Minimum

  • Bachelors Degree (B.Eng. / B.Com. Information Technology)

Ideal

  • Masters in business administration (MBA)

Relevant Experience required

  • Twenty years of progressive management experience, substantively in IT in the financial services industry, (enterprise system integration; formal systems; Agile / DevOps Development Life Cycle)
  • Eight years at an IT executive level with deep banking business understanding, and program and project experience at a senior level.
