MAIN PURPOSE OF THE JOB:
To plan, direct and co-ordinate activities concerning the provision of continuous laboratory services in order to ensure the smooth, effective, efficient and reliable running of the facility/laboratory, including satisfactory performance of personnel and compliance with specifications, regulations and laid down standard procedures, practices and corporate governance.
Key Performance Areas:
- Maintain integrity and reliability of all activities carried out at the Swakop Uranium (SU) Laboratory.
- Manage the Laboratory to provide assurance that all QC/QA targets are met, by leading the Laboratory Team to ensure agreed targets are achieved, with safety and environmental guidelines.
- Assess the outcome of Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC) audits and implement improvements as required.
- Optimize turnaround time for samples to ensure accurate and timely results are achieved and maintained.
- Manage and monitor rights and responsibilities related to the laboratory as directed.
- Ensure that laboratory equipment is always available and in good condition.
- Ensure that correct procedures are followed and differences between results obtained are within set limits.
- Perform special analytical procedures and operate specialized instruments.
- Compile comprehensive reports on results of all analyses performed at Swakop Uranium (SU) Laboratory.
- Ensure that results are captured on the database (Labware database) as per standard procedures.
- Participate in special projects and department meetings via input, feedback and execution of assigned tasks.
- Develop and maintain daily, weekly and monthly reporting procedures for production and operating costs.
- Ensure that special projects results are shared with stakeholders after verifying and confirming that results pass the QA/QC system.
- Responsible for budget control, based on production requirements, and controls expenditure within approved parameters.
Requirements and experience:
- Grade 12 or current NSSCO with 20 points over 5 subjects.
- B-Tech or BSc Degree in Chemistry.
- 8 years experience in a mining/chemical / metallurgical/ smelter laboratory environment of which 3 years should have been in a managerial capacity.
- Sound working knowledge in the implementation of quality control/quality assurance procedures.
- Experience with the use of analytical instrumentation / Wet chemical and instrumental inorganic analysis.
- Experience in managing Quality Assurance/Quality Control processes and procedures in a mining laboratory.
- Experience in the use of statistical methods in data verification and validation.
- Valid Code B/BE Drivers License
