Job Description

In line with local and international marine legislation and regulations as well as company operating standards and procedures, the Company employs a number of Officers at sea, namely Captains, Chief Navigation Officers, 2nd Navigation Officers, Chief Engineering Officers, 2nd and 3rd Engineering Officers. All these positions require academic learning as well as competency-based practical experience at sea in order to qualify for these positions and build an Officer-at-Sea career.

Debmarine Namibia offers bursaries to qualifying candidates to complete the academic learning and cadetships to complete the competency-based practical development at sea in line with international Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW).

Candidates decide whether they would prefer to follow a career in the Deck Department or the Engine Department.

Engine Department Careers:
The candidate would need to complete an academic course which meets the requirements of STCW (e.g Bachelor or Advanced Diploma in Marine Engineering).
This will be followed by active time at sea (minimum 12 months) during which the candidate will complete a record book of STCW competencies as well as workshop training.
Once the official assessors are satisfied that all requirements have been met, the candidate will complete an oral assessment with the authority responsible for issuing the certificate of competence (CoC).
Upon successful completion, the candidate will be issued with an Officer in Charge of an Engineering Watch CoC and may be considered for placement as a 4th /3rd Engineering Officer in the Debmarine Namibia fleet.
In line with candidates capabilities and aspirations, they may proceed to Second Engineer Officer and Chief Engineer Officer upon achieving relevant competencies in terms of technical skills as well as leadership, once they successfully complete the oral assessments with the authority responsible for issuing the CoC. Such candidates may be considered for the positions of Second Engineer Officer and Chief Engineer Officer respectively upon meeting all requirements of the recruitment procedure.

Qualifications

Additional to the above, candidates must have an a ccredited Mechanical Engineering qualification in addition to the below:

  • be a Namibian citizen
  • be motivated to follow a career as Officer at Sea
  • be self driven and learning orientated
  • have good communication and interpersonal skills
  • be able to work in a team
  • choose one of the below departments (Deck or Engine) and meet the requirement as listed for the specific department:
